Sri Lanka Customs collected 212.4 billion rupees in February 2025, exceeding its 160.2 billion-rupee target by 28% (46.4 billion rupees). Officials attribute the jump to stronger enforcement, improved valuation and a rebound in imports alongside currency movements.
Sri Lanka received USD 729 million in worker remittances in February 2026 and USD 1.48 billion in January–February 2026, a 32% year-on-year increase. February was slightly lower than January's USD 751.1 million.
Sri Lanka's national poverty line rose to Rs. 16,730 per person per month in January 2026, up from Rs. 16,334 a year earlier. Most districts recorded increases of about Rs. 380–Rs. 430, with Colombo highest at Rs. 18,044 and Moneragala lowest at Rs. 15,997.

Sri Lanka will lower the SSCL registration threshold to Rs9 million per quarter (Rs36 million annually) from April 1, 2026, broadening the tax base. The bill also proposes to remove the SSCL exemption at vehicle import and instead exempt turnover from wholesale and retail trade of motor vehicles.
A Bill to amend the SSCL Act was gazetted, lowering the registration threshold to Rs.9 million per quarter (Rs.36m annually) from 1 April 2026 and removing the import-stage SSCL exemption on motor vehicles while exempting wholesale and retail motor vehicle turnover. The Bill sets a 15-day registration window and a de-registration test; KPMG noted no transitional rule for vehicles already in inventory as at 31 March 2026.
