Melstacorp PLC appointed D. Hasitha S. Jayawardena as Executive Chairman with immediate effect via a board resolution dated 6 February 2025. He was previously a Non-Independent Non-Executive Director, holds 7,531,332 Melstacorp shares, and the board also appointed M.R. Mihular as Senior Independent Director.
Hasitha Jayawardena was appointed chairperson of Melstacorp and Distilleries Company of Sri Lanka, effective 6 February, in stock exchange filings. He was also named chairperson of Balangoda Plantations and Madulsima Plantations; Melstacorp holds 92.44% of Distilleries.
Aitken Spence PLC appointed D S T (Stasshani) Jayawardena as Chairperson and M R Mihular as Senior Independent Director. Jayawardena is an executive director with leadership roles across the group and holds positions at Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings, Melstacorp, Distilleries and Lanka Milk Foods.
Stasshani Jayawardena has been appointed chairperson of Aitken Spence and will chair group companies including Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings, the company said in a stock exchange filing. She is also a director of Melstacorp, Distilleries Company of Sri Lanka and Lanka Milk Foods.
Colombo market lost Rs.188 billion as the ASPI plunged ~500 points (3%) and the S&P SL20 fell 3.3%, taking market cap below Rs.6 trillion with turnover of Rs.6.35bn. Banking stocks were the main drag (Commercial Bank, Melstacorp, Sampath Bank, NDB); Ceylinco, Teejay, Browns and JKH featured in top turnover.

Deshamanya Harry Jayawardena, chairman of Melstacorp PLC, has died aged 82. He also served as chairman of Distilleries Company of Sri Lanka and Aitken Spence.

Fitch recalibrated Sri Lanka’s national rating scale, upgrading seven non-financial corporates (including Sri Lanka Telecom to AA-(lka), Windforce to A+(lka) and Resus Energy to A-(lka)) and revising Bogawantalawa Tea Estates to BBB+(lka).
