President Anura Kumara Dissanayake held a special discussion with plantation company representatives on the proposed increase to estate workers' daily wages to align with recent public/private sector salary hikes and discussed implementation; the government pledged support for developing the plantation sector.
President Anura Kumara Disanayake urged plantation companies to raise estate workers' daily wages and said the government will support the industry to implement the increase. Representatives from major planters, including Kahawatte, Malwatte, Kelani Valley, Balangoda, Browns, Kegalle and Kotagala, took part.
Telbedde Estate of Balangoda Plantations (BALA.N0000) and Pedro Estate of Kelani Valley Plantations (KVAL.N0000) secured the second- and third-highest prices at the Ceylon Specialty Estate Tea charity auction in Osaka, fetching JPY 65,000/kg and JPY 55,000/kg respectively.
Balangoda Plantations PLC's Telbedde Estate won the Overall Gold Award at the Ceylon Specialty Estate Tea of the Year 2025, and its OP1 lot fetched ¥65,000/kg (Rs. 133,620/kg) at a charity auction in Osaka. The estate is under the stewardship of Melstacorp PLC, and the recognition is expected to bolster demand for its premium single-estate teas.
Balangoda Plantations' Telbedde Estate (part of Melstacorp) was named a 2025 Outstanding Tea Producer and has posted record auction prices, including a Rs. 2,500/kg BOP1 sale. The 1,121-hectare estate (512 ha under tea) uses sustainable practices and supports about 5,000 residents.
Multiple plantation companies (Agarapatana, Elpitiya, Talawakelle, Hatton, Watawala, Kegalle, Kelani Valley, Maskeliya, Namunukula, Kahawatte and Balangoda) are running scholarship programs supporting hundreds of students; Elpitiya alone funds 100 university and 80 A/L students at a cost exceeding LKR 12.4m.

Colombo Stock Exchange closed higher: ASPI +1.38% to 16,734 and S&P SL20 +1.48% to 4,996, with turnover Rs2bn and net foreign outflow Rs75mn. Top contributors included Ceylinco Holdings, Melstacorp and Commercial Bank; several chairperson appointments were made following Harry Jayawardena's death.
Hasitha Jayawardena was appointed chairperson of Melstacorp and Distilleries Company of Sri Lanka, effective 6 February, in stock exchange filings. He was also named chairperson of Balangoda Plantations and Madulsima Plantations; Melstacorp holds 92.44% of Distilleries.
The ASPI closed the week up 0.2% at 12,313 (23-point gain) while the S&P SL20 fell 0.5%, with market turnover averaging Rs. 1.75 billion. Diversified financials led turnover and there was positive investor interest in plantation names (BALA, AGPL), LB Finance, Lankem, C T Holdings, Central Finance, HNB and Digital Mobility (PKME).

Top movers included Dialog, Digital Mobility, Dipped Products, Maskeliya and Hemas, with net foreign outflow of Rs 317 million and mixed foreign buying/selling across counters.
Colombo market closed lower with the S&P SL20 down 0.7% and ASPI down 0.4%, while foreigners were net buyers of Rs.153.6m. Banks (e.g. Commercial Bank, Sampath) dragged indices, while Balangoda Plantations, John Keells and Hayleys Fabric led turnover with mixed price moves.
